The annual flu vaccination campaign opens this Tuesday, October 17, 2023 in France, and is now open to children.

HEALTH – Avoid an epidemic at all costs ” severe ” like last winter, when 14,000 hospitalizations and around 1,500 deaths were observed. If those over 65 were the most affected, almost 90% of the deaths, younger age groups were hit to an unusual degree. The outbreak has been specific in other ways. It started early, in November, and lasted a very long time, with a second wave relaunching it in early 2023.

Hence the importance of the annual flu vaccination campaign which opens this Tuesday, October 17 in France. “Seasonal flu vaccination takes place from October 17, 2023 to January 31, 2024”announces Health Insurance on its website. “The campaign will be carried out in conjunction with the vaccination campaign once morest Covid-19”.

It was initially planned that the two campaigns would be launched at the same time, but the one once morest Covid was brought forward by two weeks (October 2) given the continuation of the epidemic, which resurfaced in the heart of summer, at the time of the back to school in September.

Who can get vaccinated?

This is the new feature of the 2023 campaign. It is open to the entire population, including children aged 2 to 17, for the first time this year following a favorable opinion from the High Authority for Health (HAS) last February.

Audiences are nevertheless priority:

people aged 65 and over all people, regardless of their age, suffering from certain chronic illnesses pregnant women people suffering from obesity (BMI greater than 40) people staying in a follow-up care establishment or in a medical establishment social accommodation regardless of their age.

For other groups, vaccination is recommended: health professionals, home helpers and those close to children under 6 months at risk of serious complications from influenza and also children aged 2 to 17 years.

How much does vaccination cost?

For priority groups and people with a long-term illness (ALD), Health Insurance covers 100%. Coverage is 65% for other groups for whom vaccination is recommended, that is to say in particular children aged 2 to 17. For the population who are not at risk, Health Insurance does not cover it. You then have to pay around twenty euros.

Where can you get vaccinated?

Doctors and midwives can vaccinate all people, whether they are a priority or not and regardless of age. Nurses and pharmacists can vaccinate everyone over 11 years old. Nurses can also vaccinate children under 11 on medical prescription.

Can we get vaccinated once morest flu and Covid at the same time?

To avoid the triple epidemic of winter 2022-2023 (flu, Covid and bronchiolitis in infants), health authorities recommend a double flu-Covid vaccination. They also specify that “ there is no minimum time to respect between a flu vaccination and a Covid-19 vaccination “. The two injections can, for example, be given at the same time, one in each arm.
