The flu wave is sweeping through Austria and leading to numerous sick leave. In the first week of the new year, 10,160 reports of incapacity for work were received by the ÖGK in Carinthia. There were 734 people infected with corona. While 2,758 Carinthians had to stay in bed due to a flu-like infection, 56 people in the southern state fell ill with the real flu. A comparison with the numbers from the first calendar week of 2023 shows: Overall, fewer Carinthians reported sick than in the previous year, but the number of people infected with Corona has risen significantly.

What’s new in 2023: Weeks 51 and 52
In 2023, there was a significant decrease in week 52: 1,855 cases of flu-like infections, 40 cases of true flu and still present 723 Covid cases, resulting in a total 8,388 sick reports led. This development was also observed in week 51: 4,629 cases of flu-like infections, 37 cases of real flu and 1,767 Covid cases led to an overall picture of 14,852 sick reports.
Decrease in sick reports compared to 2022
The reduction in AU cases in 2023 compared to 2022, especially in influenza infections and true influenza, suggests a strengthening of preventive measures. It is possible that increased hygiene measures, widespread vaccination campaigns and the introduction of Covid vaccinations helped alleviate the burden of disease and raise awareness of infectious diseases.

The numbers are increasing across Europe
“Increased influenza virus activity is being recorded across Europe. The numbers are also increasing in Austria. Both with the real flu, the flu-like infections and with Covid. Now would be the right time for a vaccination. Because the actual flu wave is still ahead of us. “But it is also important to wear a mask and wash or disinfect your hands regularly to avoid infection and further spread,” emphasizes the ÖGK chief physician Andreas Krauter.
