Melbourne: Reigning champions USA, European champions England, Netherlands and Denmark have entered the pre-quarters of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Portugal were eliminated in the group stage.
In the Group D match, England defeated China by six goals to one. With this victory, England became the group champions with nine points from three matches. Lauren James scored a brace for England, while Alecia Russo, Lauren Hemp, Chloe Kelly and Rachel Daly were also on target. Wang Shuah scored a consolation goal for China with a penalty. England’s opponents in the pre-quarters are Nigeria.
In the group’s other match, Denmark advanced to the pre-quarters following defeating Haiti 2-0. Harder in Pern and Nielsen in San Trolsgaard scored for the team. Denmark will face Australia in the pre-quarters.
The United States, the defending champions from Group E, barely made it to the pre-quarters. The team drew goalless with Portugal. America reached the pre-quarters by finishing second with five points from three matches. Portugal is out of the World Cup with this draw. The team has four points.
In the group’s other match, the Netherlands thrashed Vietnam 7-0 to reach the last 16 as group champions. Esme Brugts and Jill Roord scored twice for the Netherlands, while Leike Martens, Katya Snoise and Danille van de Dong were also on target.
