The 2023 edition of the European Fantastic Film Festival welcomes the immense American-British director Terry Gilliam. In ten days, a selection of his best works will be presented, but also more than a hundred rare, legendary and precious feature and short films.
After having seen 350 short films and 200 feature films, the Fantastic Film Festival team has finished refining its selection. In the end, 111 films will be offered to the public in 175 screenings, including 2 specials, from September 22 to October 1. Among these films, 16 French premieres and 7 European premieres to be seen in all Strasbourg cinemas, including Le Cosmos for the first time.
Like every year, 14 feature films will compete for the title of Méliès d’argent during the official competition; the winner wins the right to compete for the Méliès d’or at the world fantasy film festival in Sitges, Spain. These films include a revised version of Conan the Barbarian, called Conan, where the hero transforms into a heroine and unfolds in six different ages… to fight once morest totalitarianism each time. Conan as a leftist, we didn’t see it coming.

Another French entry in competition, the story of Vincent, whose life becomes hell when everyone he meets attacks him. Vincent Must Die by Stéphan Castang is a survival film, where the violence and wickedness of others is also imposed on the audience, who does not emerge from the screening unscathed.

We must also mention the impressive Miners, which mixes genre film with social cinema, with documented historical work on the working conditions of the last miners in France. Also note, in the “crossover” competitions, the incredible performance of Willem Dafoe, the only actor in the film, in Inside.

The festival also has an increasingly extensive animated film competition. This year, several French teams are competing with Mars Expressa co-production of the Strasbourg company Amopix, Mon ami robot et Sirocco and the kingdom of drafts very inspired by the work of Studios Ghibli.
The Terry Gilliam phenomenon
The immense Terry Gilliam is the festival’s guest of honor. Member of Monty Python, the American director has signed monuments of contemporary cinema such as Brazil, The Fisher King, The Army of the Twelve Monkeys… All these films will be on display at the festival as part of a dedicated retrospective to which the FEFFS team has added Lost in La Manchathe excellent documentary behind the scenes of a film that might never be finished, with the late Jean Rochefort as Don Quixote.

For his part, Terry Gilliam chose two films for his carte blanche: the very disturbing Feast by Marco Ferreri with notably Marcello Mastroianni, Philippe Noiret and Michel Piccoli, and Paths of Gloryantimilitarist work, long banned in France, by Stanley Kubrick on the Great War with an imperial Kirk Douglas.
For its retrospective, the FEFFS team chose the excesses of sport and the entertainment society, with films as essential as Rollerball (1975) et The Price of Danger (1983) with Gérard Lanvin and Michel Piccoli, as well as Death Live (1980) by Bertrand Tavernier with Romy Schneider and Harvey Keitel. The Truman Showwhere Jim Carrey begins to rub shoulders with the limits of an ideal world in which he has always lived, is also on the program.

The Fantastic Film Festival no longer has its famous zombie walk, which has become impossible to organize in our world afraid of itself. However, he keeps his “Excentric Night”, a series of screenings of the most failed films of creation. On the program from midnight Saturday September 30: The Invincible Kung-Fu Kid, The Streets of Hell and the Cave Man.
