Article 123 of the legal framework establishes that, during voting day, a period of 36 hours before and 12 hours following, both the distribution and consumption of said beverages is prohibited. This means that the restriction is activated at 12:00 on Friday, August 18.

Subsequently, within a period of three days, the citizen must present his summons accompanied by evidence that justifies his conduct. In case of not proceeding with the defense, the provincial director of the electoral entity may impose the economic sanction of 225 dollars.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE ELECTIONS IN ECUADOR 2023

Ecuador will go to the polls this Sunday to elect a new president to replace the conservative Guillermo Lasso, in a transition process that might add to the turn to the left and progressivism that other Latin American countries have already given.

Lasso, who decided to cut his term that was due to end in 2025 due to not being able to carry out the reforms he wanted in the National Assembly (Parliament), will leave power with the frustration of not having been able to forge the vision of the country that he planned, on everything in the legal scaffolding to attract investment.

And it is that the strategy of the outgoing president, a banker by trade, was oriented towards neoliberal policies that collided with the resistance of social groups, especially indigenous people, and the brake of a National Assembly dominated by the opposition.

Eight candidates have registered to succeed Lasso in the Presidency and among them are two who might lead a process of reversal of the neoliberal strategy and take a turn to the left.

They are the candidate Luisa González, from the progressive movement Revolución Ciudadana, led by former President Rafael Correa (2007-2017), and the leftist and environmentalist Yaku Pérez, from the “Claro que se puede” coalition, where left-wing groups, indigenous organizations come together , unions, teachers and environmentalists.

The other candidacies located from the center to the right open the possibility that the changes are more moderate and Ecuador maintains the line sustained during the last six years.

The businessmen Xavier Hervas (RETO) and Daniel Noboa (ADN), the former vice president Otto Sonnenholzner (Actuemos), the security expert Jan Topic (País Sin Miedo), the independent lawyer Bolivar Armijos (Amigo) and the journalist Christian Zurita (Build).
