A solar eclipse is an astronomical phenomenon in which the sun is partially (or completely) obscured by the moon’s passage in front of it. There are total solar eclipse, annular solar eclipse and partial solar eclipse.

How a Solar Eclipse Occurs
Because the moon’s orbit around the earth is slightly tilted, it is not normally aligned in a straight line.
Although the diameter of the moon and the sun is regarding 400 times different, the distance between the moon and the sun is also regarding 400 times different from the earth, so the apparent size of the moon and the sun from the earth is almost the same. However, because the moon’s orbit around the earth is elliptical, the eclipse seen when the moon is closer to the earth is different than when it is farther away.
When the sun, moon, and earth are lined up in a straight line, if the distance to the moon is close to the earth, the apparent size of the moon will increase, resulting in a “total solar eclipse” in which the sun is completely hidden behind the entire moon. Because the sun is hidden, the sky becomes a deep blue, dark sky that looks like night has come despite it being daytime, and the invisible corona can be seen around the sun.
Just before and following a total eclipse, you can also see a diamond ring where only part of the black sun shines like a diamond.
■Golden Circle Eclipse
When a solar eclipse occurs when the moon is far from the earth, the apparent size of the moon becomes smaller, so the sun cannot be completely hidden, and the sun protrudes from around the moon and looks like a ring “annular solar eclipse” will be
■Partial solar eclipse
Areas where a total solar eclipse or an annular solar eclipse can be seen are limited, but in the surrounding area, part of the sun is hidden and the sun appears to be missing, resulting in a “partial solar eclipse”. Sometimes only a partial solar eclipse occurs.
A solar eclipse is different in how much the sun is lacking depending on where you see it, and the time when the solar eclipse occurs is also different. During the solar eclipse, please check the information of the observation point and enjoy the mysterious astronomical phenomenon.
Annular Total Solar Eclipse 2023 Special Program
Delivery date: Thursday, April 20, 11:30-14:00
Weathernews is planning to broadcast the Annular Total Solar Eclipse 2023 Special Program, which will provide astronomical commentary while delivering live footage of the solar eclipse from Japan and overseas. There are only a limited number of areas in Japan where you can see a partial solar eclipse, so please enjoy the solar eclipse from this special program.
