Mikaela Shiffrin is aiming for her eighth crystal ball in the slalom.

Having already won the Slalom World Cup seven times, she secured the coveted trophy again in 2023, which had eluded her in the previous three seasons for various reasons. Despite the shrinking gap to her main competitor Peter Vlhova and other aspiring riders like Lena Duerr and Wendy Holdenerremains Shiffrin the undisputed queen of the white circus, especially in her specialist discipline in which she has achieved an impressive 53 victories.

Vlhova, the reigning Olympic champion, has also achieved several victories in 2023, including in Flachau and the final in Soldeu. She has proven that she knows how to win large and small crystal balls, an art she has already mastered in the 2019/20 and 2021/22 seasons. The duels with Shiffrin promise, especially from the double race in Levi, to be a head-to-head race for every hundredth of a second.

Holdener, who won her first slalom World Cup races in Killington and Sestriere at the end of 2022, then showed slight weaknesses and narrowly missed the gold medal at the World Championships. Nevertheless, the 30-year-old Swiss has the opportunity to stick with her long-time rivals and perhaps use their small mistakes to fight for her first crystal ball.

Duerr has the day everyone is up Shiffrins Record victory awaited, triumphed in Spindleruv Mlyn and was able to celebrate again, ten years after her first success in the parallel slalom in Moscow. In the last two years she has fully established herself again in slalom and has also shone at major events. Even if it seems utopian that they… Shiffrin and Vlhova could vie for the small ball, it is unlikely that they will often be pushed off the podium or out of the top five.

Anna Swenn-Larsson shows that the performances in the women’s slalom are quite balanced. She finished fifth in the 2022/23 World Cup and scored in Killington, together with Holdener, her first World Cup victory. Starting with Levi, she could fight for podium places on a track that suits her abilities.

Among the rising stars is Zrinka Ljutic to be highlighted, who, despite her mistakes, was already on the podium in Spindleruv Mlyn at the age of 19. With another year of experience she could make a leap in quality and challenge the big names. Paula Moltzan has proven that she is capable of getting close Shiffrin as she showed at the night slalom in Semmering. Also Laurence St-Germainthe world champion in the slalom from Méribel, is a serious competitor.

Katharina Liensbergerthe 2021 slalom world champion and 2020/21 slalom crystal ball winner, as well Michelle Gisin, which is trying to get back to its former form, are also names to keep an eye on. If Liensberger returns to her true form, the Austrian from Vorarlberg can comfortably compete Shiffrin and Vlhova compete.
