CO2 emissions from petrol and diesel fell by 1.1% in 2022 compared to the previous year. The drop is more than 8% compared to the values of 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic.
Compared to 1990, which serves as a reference year, emissions from fuels have fallen by 5.5%, the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) said in a press release on Tuesday. In addition, in 2022, the share of biofuels has increased somewhat, representing 3.4% of fuels used, compared to 3.3% in 2021.
The pandemic has influenced the behavior of the population in terms of mobility, notes the FOEN. There is more telework and less business travel. More and more electric vehicles are also circulating on Swiss roads.
Energetic efficiency
As for fuel-related emissions (mainly oil and gas), they fell by 4.9% compared to 2021, and by 36% compared to 1990. This decrease is mainly due to greater energy efficiency of buildings as well as to increased use of renewable energy for heating.
The FOEN emphasizes the increased efforts in this area on the part of the cantons, as well as the national campaign for energy savings. High energy prices have also undoubtedly contributed to this reduction in emissions.
