Never before in Switzerland have absences from work due to accident or illness been as long as in 2022. Almost two weeks for a full-time employee on average. The Covid would be an explanation.
Absenteeism reached 9.3 days in 2022, while the annual number of days of absence was between 6.2 and 7.2 days between 2010 and 2019, note the SonntagsBlick and the SonntagsZeitung, returning to published figures by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) last May.
The increase in absences in 2022 compared to this period thus reaches 34%. And even compared to the previous two pandemic years, absenteeism last year is still 20% higher. There were indeed 8.1 days of absence on average in 2020 and 7.5 days in 2021.
The increase in absenteeism has manifested itself in all sectors, according to the OFS. However, it is mainly young people and women who have missed work.
The OFS did not expressly determine the reasons for this increase in absenteeism, only publishing the figures. According to the Sunday newspapers, insurers are assuming that the pandemic has changed the attitude towards the disease.
