2021 NFL Draft: Round 1 Results and Surprises

2021-04-30 07:00:00

Round 1 of the highly anticipated 2021 NFL Draft is through!

There were a few surprises once more at this year’s talent selection in Cleveland, but as expected for weeks, the top star went to the Jacksonville Jaguars, who had the very first pick.

Quarterback mega-talent Trevor Lawrence (21) from Clemson University, who has actually been a top pick for three years, is going to the Jags in Florida and will compete for the spot with cult playmaker Gardner Minshew. “I was super nervous before and I’m just happy to be a part of the Jacksonville community now,” Lawrence said following being drafted.

Also, as many expected, the New York Jets snapped up second-placed Zach Wilson from Brigham Young University (BYU) in Utah, also a quarterback.

Mac Jones to Patriots – DeVonta Smith to Eagles following trade

Before the draft started at 2:25 a.m. German time, ESPN revealed another explosive message: Star quarterback and league MVP Aaron Rodgers apparently wants to leave the Green Bay Packers following 16 years and has “told some in the organization that he is not going to wants to return to the team”.

The first surprise in the draft itself came with pick no. 3. As expected, the San Francisco 49ers chose a quarterback, but not for Mac Jones, but for Trey Lance (North Dakota State). Jones of Alabama only crossed the table at 15, he succeeds Tom Brady with the New England Patriots.

The first trade came in 10th place, the Philadelphia Eagles (originally tied at 12th) traded with the Dallas Cowboys and grabbed Heisman-winner DeVonta Smith, the top wide receiver of the year’s draft.

The New York Giants traded their pick on the 11 to the Chicago Bears (pick #20), who took quarterback Justin Fields from Ohio State. Fields was also drafted later than expected.

The young German professional Amon-Ra St. Brown still has to be patient, the wide receiver from the University of Southern California (USC) was not one of the 32 talents drawn on the first day of the draft. The other draft rounds are scheduled for the night of Saturday and Sunday.
