2020 NBA Draft: Decreased Number of Players Seeking Entry Amid Uncertainty

2020-04-29 07:00:00

As the situation is exceptional and the Draft particularly uncertain, the number of players who want to make the leap into the NBA is less important than the last two years.

The figure is still high, but the drop is significant. ESPN teaches us that the league has communicated to NBA teams the number of registrants for the 2020 Draft: 205 players. Among them, 163 come from American universities and 42 from abroad.

The uncertainty linked to the Draft process has undoubtedly cooled the world since, last year, there were 233 “early entrants” and even 236 in 2018, when the NCAA authorized basketball players to present themselves and carry out tests with franchises before returning to their colleges if the feedback was not as good as hoped.

Of course, most players can therefore remove their name from the final list. NCAA players who have not signed an agent have until June 3, although the college league has already announced that it will be flexible with dates. Players who are not from NCAA will have them up to 10 days before the Draft.

Except that for the moment, nothing confirms that the Draft will be well held “on D-day”, that is to say on June 25. Some NBA leaders would like it not to be organized before August and it seems complicated to place it in the calendar as long as the fate of the NBA season has not been decided.

Last figure: last season, of the 233 registered in the first list, only 98 had finally tried their luck on the evening of the Draft, to win one of the 60 precious places.

For the 205 registered players, it is now possible to carry out interviews (video) with the clubs.

Note that there are five French people in these “early entrants”, that is to say players who show up before their automatic eligibility. In addition to Killian Tillie, who does not need to register to be able to be selected, we thus find Killian Hayes, Théo Maledon, Joel Ayayi, Yves Pons and Mouhamed Thiam.
