200,000 people in Austria suffer from Long Covid – Coronavirus

In Austria, long-Covid sufferers are often forgotten. Around 200,000 people suffer from long-term effects following a corona infection.

About ten percent of all people who are ill with Corona have to contend with long-term effects. The probability of Long Covid is at Omikron just as high as with other variants.

Around 200,000 people in Austria suffer from long-Covid symptoms. Instead of help and therapy, those affected often experience a “gauntlet” between authorities and medical facilities, reports the ORF.

“Need help and no psychotropic drugs”

SPÖ women’s spokeswoman Eva Maria Holzleitner criticized a central coordination point during a background discussion. Those seeking help would simply be sent away by doctors or forwarded to psychologists, as Alexa Stephanou from the Long Covid Austria initiative explains. “We need medical help, not psychotropic drugs.”

40 percent can no longer work

Even following a mild course, ten to 15 percent often suffer from the long-term consequences of a corona infection for years. These include rapid exhaustion and up to 80 percent reduced performance. Around 40 percent of those affected by long-Covid can no longer return to their previous jobs.
