20,000 undelivered letters found at a former postman

A former employee of the Spanish Postal Service was arrested in early June following 20,000 undelivered letters were found in the house he had just sold, El Pais reports.

The resident of the village of Biar, had worked as a postman between 2012 and 2013. However, his contract had not been renewed due to “irregularities”, says the employer.

Nine years later, the man sold his residence and the new owners hired workers to carry out some work. The latter also had to empty the house since the previous owner had not done so. They then discovered huge piles of envelopes still sealed in garbage bags.

The envelopes contained letters, invoices and official documents that the former postman had simply kept at home. However, no packages were found in the residence.

The man was then arrested by the police and released until the investigation was completed. The letters have been handed over to the Spanish post office, which will redistribute them to the recipients.
