Florida Keys – Seven Mile Bridge
Locals and visitors to the Florida Keys are celebrating the tropical island chain’s 200th anniversary this year.

Named for James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States, Monroe County, which encompasses all of the Florida Keys and the Everglades, was formed on July 3, 1823. To kick off celebrations that will mark the historic anniversary over the coming months, The “200 Years of Paradise Kick-Off Concert” will take place on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at 6 p.m. at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater in Truman Waterfront Park in Key West. The diverse program consists of live music by Nick Norman and Howard Livingston, insights into the history of the Florida Keys and a drone show featuring 250 drones that will illuminate the park with iconic images of the Florida Keys. Entry is free.

Celebrations from Key Largo to Key West

Other Bicentennial events include Naval Air Station Key West’s Southernmost Air Spectacular, an air show on April 15-16, 2023, and a sea-to-table dinner on Saturday, April 10 June 2023 in Islamorada. The focus here is on protecting and restoring the coral reefs of the island chain. In addition, numerous exhibits on the islands commemorate the rich and vibrant history of the Florida Keys. The closing event will take place on the founding day, July 3, 2023 in the Lower Keys. In addition to a large firework display to crown the anniversary celebration, the largest key lime pie in the world is also to be baked there. (red)
