The work of the 49th edition of the Assises of the French-speaking press opened yesterday to Monday at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Benguerir (UMP6). This edition is placed under the theme “Female leadership in the media: role of the media in strengthening women’s leadership”.

The work of this Conference, in which 200 journalists, editors, leaders of the written and audiovisual press, experts from French-speaking countries, including a large majority from Africa, are taking part will continue until July 27, 2022. A space for reflection and sharing, the 49th Conference of the French-speaking press gives the floor to women leaders to question these fundamental issues and initiate avenues of work for fairer access to basic economic, social and political rights. The media are recognized as an essential vector for the promotion of education, peace and security in the world. The media were called by the Beijing World Conference on Women to adopt regulatory mechanisms that “promote a balanced and diverse representation of women by the international media and communication systems and that promote increased participation of women and men to production and decision making. The UPF is joining forces in this 49th edition with the OCP group, which has included in its development strategy the promotion of women’s leadership, both internally in terms of human resources management and externally through support for many landmark initiatives in Africa.
In the media sector in particular, the UPF – through its Moroccan section – had carried out, in 2021, an unprecedented study on the image and place of women in the media in Morocco.
The 49th Conference will be an opportunity to broaden the spectrum of this study and launch a report taking stock of the current state of play of women’s leadership in the media in the French-speaking world.
The International Meetings of the French-speaking press have been organized for 70 years in different regions of the French-speaking world. They welcome on average 250 to 300 participants over 3 days of conferences. The city of Conakry (Guinea) received the 46e Assises in 2017, followed by the 47th edition in Tsaghkadzor (Armenia), in 2018 and the 48th edition in 2019 in Yaoundé (Cameroon).
