LR Teschl-Hofmeister: Animal rescuers and their dog handlers provide valuable services for our compatriots
St. Polten (OTS) – This week the rescue dogs of Lower Austria invited to the anniversary “20 years of mantrailing” in Sieghartskirchen. True to their motto “We are there when you need us”, the current 13 dogs and their ten dog handlers are on duty in dangerous situations for the Lower Austrians. “The rescue dogs of Lower Austria are an indispensable part of the rescue organizations in our country. The rescue dogs of Lower Austria have been able to complete over 800 missions in the past 20 years and help our compatriots in dangerous situations. I would like to congratulate you on your anniversary and thank the dog handlers who are always ready to help the people of Lower Austria with their animal heroes,” said Provincial Councilor Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister, who opened the celebrations on behalf of Provincial Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner.
“I personally witnessed the use of the rescue dogs many years ago when my cousin’s husband passed away due to his dementia. It was impressive how professionally and competently such assignments are handled. I would like to sincerely and sincerely thank all those responsible and involved for the valuable, exemplary and meticulous work over the past 20 years and wish them all the best,” said Dr. Erwin Proell, honorary chairman of the Lower Austria rescue dogs.
“We got to know the search method of mantrailing more than 20 years ago in Germany. This is the tracking of a human scent trail by a specially trained rescue dog. At that time, this search method was completely unknown in Austria in the field of rescue dogs. I found it very exciting and helpful in the field of missing person searches. The decision was then quickly made to start training mantrailer teams. First we started with Gionna and Ainuk, the bitches of Martina and Birgit. Both bitches were trained as pure mantrailers. Shortly therefollowing I also started mantrailing with my dog Fame. She was therefore the first mantrailer that was also trained as an area and rubble search dog,” says Karin Kuhn, managing director and training manager of the Lower Austria rescue dogs.
The importance of this search method was only recently seen when the trained dog “Happy” saved the life of an elderly lady on a cold night, below freezing. She was found in time, hypothermic, following a search time of around 15 minutes.
Everyone constantly “loses” odor particles. When walking, a real trail of smells is formed by each person. A trained mantrailer follows exactly this scent trail. These dogs are used when a person is missing. There are many examples of dependency. A common reason for action is the search for a person with dementia, but a walker who has sustained an injury in the woods, a child who has disappeared from the playground, or an old lady who has lost her bearings are also grounds for raising the alarm the mantrailer. Rapid alerting increases the chance of success. Do not hesitate and contact the rescue dogs of Lower Austria in an emergency. The service is free of charge and the rescue dogs can be requested around the clock.
