The jury’s verdict of guilty on the charge was unanimous. “They almost killed the man in an overkill,” the presiding judge stated in the verdict.
The maximum sentence – life imprisonment – was only not imposed because the accused had not been blamed and had confessed to the crime, the judge said. The 36-year-old admitted firing the shots, but charged himself with manslaughter. The judgment is not final. Defense attorney Rudolf Mayer asked for time to think regarding it, the prosecutor initially made no statement.
