20 years after 1A: discussion on technical aspects of the tragedy that could have been avoided

Asuncion, IP Agency.- This Thursday, August 31, the discussion “Ycua Bolaños, the tragedy that could have been avoided” was held, where technical and regulatory analyses were shared about the supermarket and the tragedy that occurred on August 1, 2004.

The activity was organized by the Fire Prevention Department of the Municipality of Asunción, with the support of the Faculty of Engineering of the UNA and the Ministry of Culture.

The head of Fire Prevention of the Municipality, Alejandro Buzó, gave the opening remarks accompanied by engineer Julio Arrúa.

The technical analysis shows that the supermarket was opened with deficiencies in its structure and measures that should have been taken from the construction. The complex did not have compartment separation between the supermarket and the food court, nor was the kitchen classified as a special risk area, so it did not have firewalls within its structure.

Another detail was that the construction was of a shed type with the roof structure made of metal rods, which has poor fire resistance.

Buzó pointed out that the fire prevention regulations in 2004 were from 1988, and the construction regulations, still in force, are from 1991. Although obligations were incorporated regarding the inclusion of sprinklers and fire extinguishing systems, he pointed out that there are still deficiencies in the regulations at the national level.
