20 Minutes Till Dawn: the hordes of monsters, a good reason to hurt yourself

More than notable option in the very large number of titles taking advantage of the popularity of Vampirer Survivors to try, too, to find their place in the subgenre of horde survivors, 20 Minutes Till Dawndeveloped by flanne, knows how to stand out, especially with its bold visuals and its style that is both evocative of fantasy and horror.

There where Halls of Tormentfor example, relied heavily on the aesthetics of Diabloeven going so far as to use the same kind of graphic fidelity as the first title in the saga of hack’n’slash developed by Blizzard, 20 Minutes Till Dawn gives much more in minimalism.

The principle remains the same, unsurprisingly: as the title suggests, you have to survive for 20 minutes, always with an increasing number of monsters, which are also gradually becoming more resistant and dangerous. And unlike other titles, 20 Minutes adopts a slightly more risky formula, namely that the character controlled by the player will have only a few opportunities to take a hit, before perishing, generally following three or four wounds suffered. Yes, it is possible to acquire additional life points, represented here by beating hearts, but it will never be possible to simply rush into the heap and destroy everything in its path.

The game therefore takes place in this context of constant stress and closeness with these enemies who seem to have come out of the abyss, alongside Cthulhu: the whole thing is full of tentacles, mean looks, a rage of destruction, and certainly a desire to devour everything in its path. Or, at least, to devour us.

Like other games of the genre, accumulating points will allow you to unlock new characters, new weapons… And surviving various levels (the game has three, for the moment) will serve to increase the difficulty, if you wishes.

Otherwise, the recipe is just as well known: you have to try to build a fast character who shoots at everything… Or a slower hero, but also more solid. All while choosing the “right” skills offered when you level up.

It is very likely that 20 Minutes Till Dawn, like many other games in the genre, will never achieve unforgettable game status. Even Vampire Survivors becomes repetitive following a while. But to change your mind, inject a little adrenaline for 20 minutes, precisely, the game is ideal. The proof that it is possible to have fun without engaging in a quest lasting several hours.

Note also that a lighter version of the game is also offered for free on itch.io, the platform for independent games.
