The crisis cell set up by the Belgian Red Cross in response to the floods will disappear on July 31, two years following the disaster which left 39 dead and more than 100,000 victims across Belgium. All of the donations collected have been used, the organization announced on Tuesday at a press conference. However, the Red Cross will remain active with people affected by the floods.

The sum of the donations, which amounted to 44.4 million euros, was fully reinvested in two stages. Around 37.3 million were used in the first eight months following the disaster to provide urgent support. Thus, six million were used in particular to set up reception points where disaster victims might obtain information, administrative assistance, food, water, etc.

But the most important item remains that of financing local projects, with 14.3 million. The Red Cross worked with the 38 most affected municipalities to meet the needs of those affected and provide material assistance.

In a second step, the Red Cross used the rest of the donations, ie 7 million euros, to set up long-term aid. This was divided into three axes: the continuation of local aid (1.6 million), support for partners in the field (0.7 million) and finally direct financial aid. About 16,000 households, or 50,000 people, were offered an amount between 230 and 350 euros, for a total of 4.75 million distributed.

“The flood cell will close its doors on July 31, but there will be a handover to the Red Cross houses which will continue to be active with the victims,” said Franck Gorchs-Chacou, director of the flood cell of the Red Cross.
