After conceding a painful 1:0 in the 90th minute against Steaua Bucharest and dropping out of the European League qualifiers, Maccabi Tel Aviv was hosted tonight (Tuesday) by Panavzhis, the Lithuanian champions, for the first game within the third round.
It wasn’t a great day to say the least for Jarko Laztic’s side, who barely held on in the closing minutes, but at the end of the day they got back on the winning track and secured an advance heading into the second leg on their way to securing a European group stage this winter. From there it seemed that Maccabi Tel dropped a gear and even though they didn’t face a real threat for many minutes, apart from half chances they didn’t really create anything on their own. In the 70th minute, she was also punished after a disgraceful defensive laxity when Ofir Davidzade lost carelessly, Sibert Gosias intercepted, raced unhindered deep into the area in front of the yellow defense and bounced over Roi Mishfa for the shriveling goal.
Laztic’s side just wanted the game to end and in the last minute of added time also said a big thank you to Mesfati after it provided a good save that prevented a dramatic equalizer from the Lithuanians. In the end, Maccabi Tel Aviv achieved a 1:2 victory that will provide it with a little breathing room at least in the test of the result and gives it a minimal advance for the rematch next week.
