2 seriously injured after shooting at Vienna’s Yppenplatz

As a police spokeswoman said on Sunday evening, at least one of the men involved in a dispute fired at the two injured men. He then fled. The background to the crime was unclear.

Knives were apparently involved in the argument, but the Vienna emergency services reported that two people had gunshot wounds. The men were given first aid on the spot and then taken to hospital. According to the police, both people are seriously injured, but their lives are not in danger. The Vienna State Office of Criminal Investigation has taken over the investigation.

Drugs were also found in the area of the crime scene, the Vienna State Police Directorate announced in a press release in the evening. It is still unclear whether this is related to the crime.

The bars on Yppenplatz were very busy that evening, probably because of the European Football Championship final. The mood among the visitors was calm despite the large police presence.

The district mayor of Vienna-Ottakring, Stefanie Lamp (SPÖ), was “shocked, sad and angry” regarding the incident. Yppenplatz stands for “the connection of an entire neighborhood.” All residents and business people have a right to safety. “As a district, we will not accept for a second if this safety cannot be guaranteed. We urgently need the support of those responsible at the federal level,” she demanded.
