New Faces Join Los Angeles City Council
Los Angeles welcomed two new council members, Adrin Nazarian and Ysabel Jurado, to its ranks on Monday. The pair took their oaths of office behind closed doors, with a public swearing-in ceremony slated for Tuesday’s council meeting.
Their inductions followed similar private ceremonies for four incumbent council members who secured new terms in the 2024 elections last week.
Representing the Valley and Downtown
Nazarian will represent the Second District, encompassing diverse neighborhoods like North Hollywood, Sun Valley, Toluca Lake, and Valley Glen. He succeeds Councilman Paul Krekorian, whose term is ending due to term limits. Krekorian announced his new role as executive director of the Office of Major Events, where he’ll play a key role in preparing Los Angeles for major sporting events, including the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics.
“Karen Bass announced last week Krekorian will serve as executive director of the Office of Major Events as part of preparations for major sporting events coming to the region. In part, he will work as a liaison for the upcoming 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
Nazarian, formerly an Assemblyman and Krekorian’s aide, emerged victorious from a race against progressive and small-business owner Jillian Burgos, securing 53.84% of the vote in the November 5th election. Jurdo, meanwhile, will represent the 14th District, a diverse area spanning downtown Los Angeles, Boyle Heights, Lincoln Heights, El Sereno and Northeast Los Angeles. Jurdo’s victory marked a significant political shift, as she unseated the incumbent Kevin de León.
A progressive candidate, Jurado secured a comfortable 57.17% of the vote.
New Leaders Across the City
Councilwoman Heather Hutt also formally began her first full term, representing the 10th District’s Central Los Angeles neighborhoods. Hutt’s appointment followed the conviction of her predecessor, Mark Ridley-Thomas, on federal corruption charges. She won decisively against Grace Yoo, capturing nearly 26% more votes in the November election
Hutt was among the council members sworn in last week, along with three incumbents: Nithya Raman, Imelda Padilla and Marqueece Harris-Dawson. Each secured re-election in the March primary, receiving over 50% of the vote in their respective districts.
