They have the gift of making online gaming painful and tense. They are the trolls. Bullies who take pleasure in challenging other players, insulting them, making homophobic, racist or other comments. Their adrenaline: pushing the other players to their limits.

The franchise Call of Duty has been present for several decades already and its various opus are among the most popular games in the world. Each game usually attracts hundreds of thousands of daily players. The last opus, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 ranks among the recent best sellers on Xbox Series X and PS5. Needless to say, Activision, publisher of the franchise, may be keen to spare its players from unnecessary inconvenience — following all, the level of stress linked to the game itself is already intense enough.

Put an end to the trolls

Activision felt that it was necessary to put an end to the trolls. Players themselves have been asked to report abusive cases but according to Activision, “ only one in 5 users report disruptive behavior “. The editor of Call of Duty therefore developed, last year, ToxMod, a moderation tool managed by artificial intelligence. ToxMod was first offered in beta in fall 2023 before being rolled out widely worldwide.

2 million accounts targeted

What does ToxMod do? It identifies “disruptive” comments in 14 different languages. The result was not long in coming: 2 million accounts found themselves in the crosshairs. And Activision says it has observed a gradual reduction in violators of its online policy.

« Call of Duty saw an 8% reduction in repeat offendersexplains Activision. Anyone detected violating the Code of Conduct is subject to actions such as global disabling of voice and text chat and/or restriction of other social features ».

The code of conduct discussed here involves treating other players with respect, and sets zero tolerance for bullying and harassment, as well as for remarks related to race, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, culture, faith, mental or physical abilities, or country of origin. Activision noted a 50% reduction in “severe cases” since November 2023.
