On Sunday followingnoon, 50,000 spectators commemorated HSV legend Uwe Seeler († 85), who died on Thursday. The north stand in the Volksparkstadion said goodbye with a banner: “Loyal and humble – the greatest of all time.” The lettering “Uns Uwe” adorned the jerseys, the coaching team wore special jerseys throughout the game.
But the memorial game for Seeler, who scored around 1,400 goals in almost 1,300 games for Hamburg from youth to the end of his career, was overshadowed by an anti-gay campaign. A group of supporters unfurled a placard directly below the memorial sentence for Seeler. It read: “The whole of MV is gay – especially the Hansa Hool.”
Association condemns discrimination
MV means the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, in which Hansa Rostock, Sunday’s opponent, is located. A Twitter user published a photo and wrote that such posters are the reason why footballers do not come out.
The club also distances itself from the homophobic derailment of its fans. “A homophobic banner was displayed on our north stand during the game today. Discrimination has no place in the Volksparkstadion and at HSV! Our diamond stands for variety and diversity,” writes the six-time German champion on Twitter.
It was a game day to forget for the former Bundesliga Dino. The game once morest Rostock was lost 0:1, the winning goal for the Hanseatic League did not come until the 94th minute. (che)
