Hamburger SV won the top game of the 2nd Bundesliga once morest Fortuna Düsseldorf and at least temporarily took over the top of the table.
Hamburg climbed to first place with a 2-0 win, while Fortuna slipped to sixth place. In addition, the “Red Pants” ruined Fortuna coach Daniel Thioune’s return to his old place of work. The coach was released in May 2021 following missing promotion to HSV.
Benes hit the post twice
The game started happily. In the second minute, Hamburg’s Lazlo Benes shot from twelve meters following a nice individual performance, but only hit the crossbar. And it was turbulent. A few minutes later, HSV striker Robert Glatzel and Fortune Matthias Zimmermann rattled their heads together. The player from Düsseldorf suffered a laceration and had to be substituted early on. When he was still being treated on the sidelines, Benes slammed the ball into the Fortuna goal once more.
Glatzel takes the lead
The Hanseatic League were the dominant team followingwards and in the 21st minute the time had come. Bakery Jatta moved up and away on the right wing and then served Glatzel in the middle, who didn’t miss this chance from close range. A little later Glatzel was once more ready to shoot in front of the goal, but goalkeeper Florian Kastemmeier intercepted the cross.
After that, the game calmed down. The guests from the Rhineland were hardly able to set any offensive accents. Shortly before the break, however, it was almost 2-0. After a cross from Jean-Luc Dompé, Jatta was there with his head, and Kastenmeier parried. A little later the goalkeeper was there once more once morest Mario Vuskovic.
Düsseldorf tried – but harmless
Thioune brought Shinta Appelkamp and Emmanuel Iyoha into the game at the break, but HSV still had the better chances at first. Moritz Heyer failed following a nice pass from Jatta from an acute angle to Kastenmeier.
The Fortunes had their first really good move in the 58th minute, when they quickly switched following winning the ball. The ball actually ended up in the Hamburg goal, but Dawid Kownacki was clearly offside when the ball was passed.
After exactly one hour, Glatzel might have made the preliminary decision when he ran towards the goal following a nice pass from Dompé, but was stopped at the last moment by defender Tim Oberhof.
Jatta puts the lid on it
In the final stages, the Fortunes came into play better and Thioune strengthened the offensive, he introduced Kwadwo Baah for defensive player Jorrit Hendrix and later Rouwen Hennings. However, the guests remained largely unimaginative. The Hamburg defended everything away. Things got turbulent once more in the last few minutes. First, Hamburg’s Sonny Kitel hit the post, then Jatta made everything clear with his head in the 90th minute.
