Two Belgian soldiers left for the Ukrainian front, including a deserter, Le Soir learned on Tuesday. Information confirmed by Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder during her visit to Belgian troops deployed in Romania.
The minister clarified daily that one of the two men had expressed his intention to leave. The Defense tried to dissuade him, but nothing worked and he resigned before going to war.
The other soldier left before he even resigned and is therefore considered by the army as a deserter, writes Le Soir. The Defense has indeed opened a file for “desertion” once morest this soldier, who left to join the Ukrainian International Legion.
According to Ludivine Dedonder, the army is certain that no one left with weapons. The Defense is however not certain at this stage that they left their uniforms in Belgium. The army has in any case warned all its soldiers. “Such an attitude will in no way be tolerated and will be prosecuted as an act of insubordination”warned the head of Defense, Admiral Michel Hofman, in an internal note.
