9-year-old boy “I caught it and it was cold and mushy”… “The largest native species is 1.3 m”

“I lifted it up with a wooden stick. I thought it was pretty cool. It was an amazing find. I thought it was an earthworm, but I didn’t know what it really was,” Domino’s said at the time.

The boy’s mother, Joe, said that the earthworm was regarding 1m in length and said, “It was very big. It looked like the child was moved.”

He said the earthworm looked like something out of a nightmare, but his son thought it was very cool and was very happy.

Domigan, who said he likes to learn regarding unusual animals, said that when he touched the earthworm with his hand, it felt cold and mushy.

The family said that Dad took a picture of the earthworm with Barnaby and then put it back in the yard, and it is not known whether he lived or died following that.

John Mariss, a curator of insect gathering at Lincoln University, said that the earthworms in the photos appear to live in mudflats, but they appear to be a species of indigenous earthworms.

He said that some of the native earthworms are very large, and it is not unreasonable to exceed one meter in height, but he said that it is rare to find giant earthworms in the yard of a house.

He added that there are at least 171 species of native earthworms in New Zealand, but scrutiny is needed to accurately identify them.

According to the New Zealand Teara Encyclopedia, some of New Zealand’s native earthworms can be over 30 centimeters long, and the largest can grow up to 1.3 meters tall.
