Today June 2 marks the day of the volunteer firefighter. It is because of that RIO NEGRO RADIO invited Celina, Yanet, Eliana and Yamila, who are part of a group of applicants that has been heavily occupied by women. They were sworn in at 5:00 p.m. following arduous training. The barracks sounded the sirens symbolically following 6:00 p.m., as was the case years ago.

Many do it by tradition, because members of their family follow the discipline. They are always predisposed, throughout the day and many times putting their lives at risk.

Celina, who is a noncommissioned officer, said that she decided to be a firefighter because her father and brother were too. She has been part of the fire brigade for 13 years.

There were more than 40 applicants who started. The road was not easy and today 19 applicants were sworn in, including 12 women and 7 men. “That makes me very happy,” said Celina and added “the female staff is gaining space.”

Yanet, for her part, indicated that she always had the need to help. «I saw the publication and it said that we might enroll up to the age of 35. It was now or he was no longer going to be able to do it. We train and train a lot. It is a long road that has only just begun. I’m so excited“, he pointed.

Eliana, who is a police officer, as well as Celina, also has relatives who are volunteer firefighters.” It was the need to help or feel useful to society, It is a way of giving back what they give us“, he pointed out.

Yamila always saw her relatives leave. «I liked the discipline they had, going to the barracks . I saw the post and said why not give it a try,” she said.

How is the training

The training lasts approximately 8 months. The institution has a practical and theoretical training group. In this regard, Yanet indicated “we already did fire practices. Last week we did the last one with a vehicle rescue. We have had a lot of support from our instructors and tools.”
