18 soldiers of the Syrian regime forces were killed and 27 others were wounded in a detonation of an explosive device targeting a military overnight bus in Damascus countryside yesterday morning, according to the Syrian News Agency (SANA).
This is one of the deadliest attacks targeting Syrian regime forces in months outside the active fighting fronts, as attacks targeting military buses in particular increased, including in the Damascus countryside.
No party has claimed responsibility for the explosion, and the regime authorities have not issued any comment.
Some sites affiliated with the Syrian opposition stated that the explosion took place in the Al-Saboura area in the Damascus countryside, on the international road leading to Lebanon, and it is believed that the forces that were targeted belong to the Fourth Division led by Maher al-Assad, brother of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
From time to time, military buses are targeted in several areas of the country. During the current year, two explosions occurred, one of which was claimed by the Islamic State on June 20, and targeted a bus in northern Syria while it was passing on a road linking the city of Raqqa with the city of Homs, killing 15 soldiers.
The second explosion took place on May 13, killing at least 10 soldiers when a bus they were traveling in was targeted in the western countryside of Aleppo, according to an official toll.
