JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli security forces stormed a town in the northern West Bank on Tuesday, sparking a clash that killed a 17-year-old Palestinian, Palestinian health authorities said. The occupied territory has been mired in violence for more than a year.
The Israeli army carried out a pre-dawn raid to make arrests in the town of Zababdeh, south of Jenin, according to local medics. Othman Abu Kharj, 17, died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The raid came as Israeli security forces continued to search for the Palestinian gunman who killed a man and his son in a gunfight in the northern Palestinian town of Hawara on Saturday.
The Israeli army said its troops had detained 15 Palestinian suspects in various towns in the northern West Bank. In Zababdeh, security forces said they shot at residents who threw explosive devices at them.
In the southern West Bank, the Israeli army has captured two Palestinians suspected of a shooting the day before in which an Israeli woman was killed and a man seriously injured. The army said the two suspects had confessed during interrogation to being involved in the attack near the Palestinian city of Hebron.
Israeli security forces said they had also confiscated the rifle used to shoot the car on Monday. A car without license plates that was allegedly used to carry out the attack was found burned north of Hebron, according to the mayor of the town of Halhoul.
Palestinian media identified the two suspects detained near Hebron as Saqer and Muhamad al-Shantir.
Israeli troops carried out large-scale search operations and arrest raids at various locations in the West Bank, according to the army. The soldiers interrogated 20 Palestinians, seized illegal vehicles and detained 13 other suspects near Hebron.
Nearly 180 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in the West Bank since the beginning of this year, according to a count by The Associated Press. Israel claimed that most of the Palestinians killed were militants. But young people who threw stones in protest of the incursions and people who did not participate in the confrontations have also been killed.
Some 30 people have been killed by Palestinian attacks on Israelis in that period.
Israel claims the raids are intended to dismantle militant networks and thwart future attacks. Palestinians say the operations undermine their security forces, inspire more armed struggle and reassert Israeli control over land they claim to form a state. Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 Six-Day War, along with East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.
