At a gathering of young people in downtown St. Louis, Missouri, a 17-year-old was shot dead on Sunday night. Nine other youths were wounded, the city’s chief of police, Robert Tracy, said on Sunday (local time). A minor who owned a handgun is therefore in police custody and is considered a suspect.

The gun attack happened around 1 a.m. in an office building. The police assume that the young people celebrated a party there. Shell casings from AR-15 rifles and other firearms were found on the ground, sources said. “This is every parent’s nightmare ten times over,” St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones said at a news conference. “My heart beats for all families who are suffering today.”
Debate on gun laws
Police Commissioner Tracy, Mayor Jones and US Rep. Cori Bush called for a ban on minors carrying guns. The Republican-dominated House of Representatives in Missouri spoke out once morest such restrictions earlier this year. “This is the first state and city I’ve come to that doesn’t prohibit youth from carrying guns,” Tracy said.
Jones had appointed him last year. Previously, Tracy served with the New York City, Chicago and Wilmington (Delaware) police departments.
