A total of 16,212 reports of suspected adverse drug reactions had been received by Swissmedic by November 22 of this year, as the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products announced on Friday. The number corresponds to a proportion of less than one per thousand. To date, 16,734,858 vaccine doses have been administered in Switzerland.
According to the Therapeutic Products Act, healthcare professionals are obliged to report serious side effects or previously unknown undesirable effects to Swissmedic. Almost half of the reports were made by medical professionals. The rest comes from those directly affected, patients or relatives.
Two-thirds are Moderna
Two thirds of the people affected were between 18 and 64 years old – with an average of 50.2 years. Almost 20 percent were over 65 years old. Only 1.1 percent of the reports were in the 12 to 17 age group. Separated by gender, women were in the majority (62.1 percent).
A good two-thirds of the reports related to the Covid-19 vaccine Spikevax from Moderna, with this vaccine being the most common at around 63 percent of all vaccine doses administered in Switzerland. With the Pfizer/Biontech Comirnaty vaccine, it was around 37 percent.
The most commonly reported side effects were fever, headache, tiredness, chills, nausea and dizziness. In 227 of the serious cases, a death was reported at a variable time interval following vaccination. The deceased were on average 78.8 years old. (SDA/tom)
