The young man was riding on the cycle path of the bridge which spans the E17 motorway when he was mowed down shortly following 10 p.m. The noise caused by the collision alerted a local resident, who discovered the teenager on the ground, next to his two-wheeler and a skateboard. The neighbor immediately called for help but the 16-year-old died on the spot.
Under the influence of alcohol, the driver did not even stop to worry regarding the state of his victim and committed a hit and run, as reported by Het Laatste Nieuws.
It took him badly. A few kilometers further, his car hit a light pole, near Saint-Nicolas. Again, the fugitive attempted to escape. But the police managed to catch up with him and immediately made the connection with the accident at Thames.
The driver, a 33-year-old man from Saint-Nicolas, tested positive for alcohol. His license was withdrawn for 15 days by order of the prosecution.
According to the public prosecutor, elements indicate that the vehicle involved in the collision with the young cyclist is indeed that of the thirties.
The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office dispatched the laboratory, a traffic expert, a forensic doctor and the Dendermonde investigating judge to the scene of the accident.
The suspect’s hearing was still in progress Tuesday noon.
