16 people saved from avalanche near Saas-Fee

An avalanche that fell outside of marked slopes near Saas-Fee in the canton of Valais on Saturday hit 16 people. All were rescued alive, as did rescue company Air Zermatt. Two people were flown to a hospital by helicopter. No information was available on the severity of the injuries in the followingnoon.

The avalanche fell in the morning outside of marked slopes near Saas-Fee in the Alphubel area and buried several ski tourers. According to the police, the avalanche cone was very large. It triggered a large-scale operation. Police and aid workers were deployed with a total of eight helicopters, according to Air Zermatt.

Rescue teams and technical material were brought to the avalanche cone with the aircraft. The area is in the high mountains. In addition to rescue specialists, avalanche dogs and firefighters were also deployed. In order to avoid further avalanches following the avalanche accident, the rescue workers evacuated three people from the summit of the Alphubel.
