16 dead, 8 injured in huge fireworks fire in Cameroon

Today, Sunday, the Cameroonian government announced that 16 people were killed in an explosion and fire caused by fireworks in a nightclub in the capital, Yaounde. Communications in a statement, “The initial report indicates 16 dead and 8 seriously injured, as a result of the fire that broke out in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The fire engulfed the main room of the nightclub in the capital’s upscale Bastos district, home to embassies and diplomats’ residences.

“The tragedy caused by the explosions of fireworks often used in these places, first devoured the roof of the building, which led to two very powerful explosions, causing panic and stampede,” the ministry added.

“When we arrived there was panic, there was a strong fire and thick smoke,” a firefighting official told AFP, on condition of anonymity.

A source indicated that the Cameroonian government will open an investigation into the accident in order to find out the causes of this explosion.
