15min readers chose “Electric car of the year 2024”: up to 100 km/h. accelerates in 3.6 seconds | Business

August 22 “Ignitis” and news portal in Lukiškiau Square in Vilnius 15min organized the first one in Lithuania “eMovement” festival. The event lasted the whole day, and the voting for the “15min Electric Car of the Year 2024” started a few days before the festival.

26 applicants, 1157 votes, three days for voting – these are the competition statistics. And this is the top five:

1. „Volvo EX30“ – 107 balsai.

2. “Hyundai Ioniq 5 N” – 98.

3. „Volkswagen ID.7“ – 75.

4. “Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer” – 66.

5. “KIA EV9” – 65.

VW ID.4, Toyota bZ4X, Nissan Ariya, Peugeot e-3008, both versions of Skoda Enyaq, KIA EV6 and EQB from Mercedes were not far behind.

“Obviously, some manufacturers’ fan votes were split between similar models: ID.7, Enyaq.” However, the success of the Volvo EX30 could be sensed, as readers were really interested in this interesting model, the price of which starts at 38,284 EUR,” commented 15min Žilvinas Pekarskas, editor of the Gazas.lt section.

What is surprising about Volvo electric cars

Volvo car manufacturers are able to surprise not only with new technologies, but also with practicality, ergonomics, and price.

For example, Volvo, the only European electric car manufacturer, already uses a wireless charging system in real life, when the electric car The XC40 Recharge charges without the use of a cable.

Such decisions really make an impression. But I was even more surprised by the smallest model in Volvo’s EV range, the EX30.

The price is like a gasoline car

First of all, the price. It starts (the simplest Core version, driven by the rear axle) from 38,284 Eur (still subtract EUR 5,000 VAT compensation). Have you ever thought that it would be possible to buy a car from the famous manufacturer Volvo at such a price? And an electric one.

Such, the simplest EX30, can go as far as a statistical Lithuanian needs on one charge – from Vilnius to Klaipėda. However, with great savings.

Manufacturers claim that you can drive 255 km without saving. However, if you make the most of the regeneration and use your economical driving skills, this version can go up to 500 km with the smallest 51 kWh battery. Well, the manufacturer indicates an average of 337 km per charge and an acceleration of up to 100 km/h. in 5.7 seconds.

However, in the city, such an electric crossover feels like a fish in water. After all, we rarely drive more than 50 km a day. So one charge, if you choose even the simplest version, can be enough for a whole week.

One charge, if you choose even the simplest version, can be enough for a whole week.

This is a really good decision by the developers of the electric car, bringing the Swedish/Chinese EV closer to those buyers who are at the crossroads of what to choose: an EV or to invest in a car with an internal combustion engine. Because the prices are essentially identical.

Well, what if 40-50 thousand for a city electric car, you don’t have to tear your pocket, you can choose more luxurious and powerful versions: the average PLUS with one engine (from EUR 41,750) or the all-wheel drive ULTRA package with two engines and a more modern, high-capacity battery. In this case, you will already exceed the limit of EUR 53,000.

The secret to the best Volvo battery: what is it made of and how far can you go?

It is important to know that the more capacious 69 kWh battery (not available with the cheapest version), called “Extended range” in English, allows you to travel much more on a single charge – as much as 475 km.

Acceleration to 100 km in the most powerful version with two engines is more than fantastic – 3.6 seconds.

In addition, the acceleration to 100 km in the most powerful version with two engines is more than fantastic – 3.6 seconds. Only Aston Martin safety cars flying on F1 tracks can boast such sporty dynamics. Therefore, believe me, I tried EX30 ULTRA Twin Motor Performance gave many beautiful moments.

But about secrets. In fact, Volvo installs two types of batteries in these electric cars – a cheaper one and a more expensive one (higher density). This allows you to cleverly maneuver at different price levels. Different types of batteries at different prices.

If you drive mainly in the city, driving shorter distances, a simpler LFP battery will be enough for you. It uses lithium iron phosphate technology, which requires less resources to produce. And those who want to drive more and have greater dynamics on a single charge can pay more and choose an NMC battery made of more expensive components – lithium, nickel, manganese and cobalt. It is characterized by higher energy density and efficiency.

Electric car of the world city in 2024

The Volvo EX30 also received good ratings in the two biggest polls. This model made it to the finals at the Geneva Motor Show in March. European journalists writing about cars say that a model entering the final seven (TOP7) is the best recommendation of experts.

But the EX30 surprised even more at the World Car of the Year elections in New York – it confidently won the title of “City Electric Car” (World Urban Car)!

What characteristics determined this?

The EX30 is small but very manoeuvrable, easy and comfortable to handle. It is roomy, the cabin can easily accommodate 4 adults. The electric car is minimalistic (there are not many buttons, essential settings are managed on a large 12.3-inch touch screen).

The list of security systems is very long – even in the Core version. And, since it’s a crossover, it’s convenient to drive to the mall (to park at the curb) and through puddles or snow (in bad weather).

It is also perfect for country roads, but the aerodynamics and the car’s center of mass are adjusted so that driving on city streets provides the greatest pleasure.
