Another corner of the world in turmoil, another possible theater of war on the way. This time what worries analysts is the Indo-Pacific with the Taiwan issue which has alarmed diplomats in the area and beyond. If the military exercise launched in recent days by the People’s Republic of China off the coast of the island had shaken the defenses of Taipei, today the risk of escalation was renewed by the record overflight of Beijing’s aircraft which in 24 hours violated the “Median Line”, the demarcation point between the two countries.
In fact, 153 planes were detected by Taiwan in the last 25 hours, 111 of which crossed the border which in past years – despite not officially recognizing it – China had always respected during its exercises. A “record” number of fighter jets and other warplanes detected by Taipei’s air defense, never seen before.
The island’s Ministry of Defense made it known and the Chinese overflights immediately moved the major diplomats in the area. First of all the Japanese who expressed “concern” about the moves of Xi Jinping and his armed forces. Tokyo, which in addition to having conveyed its fears to Beijing through the government’s deputy general secretary, Kazuhiko Aoki, also intercepted some Chinese fighter jets near the southern island of Yonaguni, not far from Taiwan.
The United States, on the other hand, is apparently monitoring Beijing’s moves “carefully” and according to Pentagon spokesperson, General Pat Ryder, has branded the Chinese government’s show of force as “irresponsible, disproportionate and destabilizing”. USA which – again according to what Ryder declared – will continue “to work with allies and partners to promote our shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific, despite the destabilizing behavior of the People’s Republic of China”.
