Audi and the city of Neckrsulm celebrate 150 years of the NSU. This includes the special exhibition “Innovation. daring. Transformation. 150 Years NSU”, which is spread over the Audi Forum and the German Two-Wheeler and NSU Museum in Neckarsulm. It was created in cooperation and can be viewed until May 5, 2024.
The name of the city and the brand are already closely linked, as NSU is derived from the rivers Neckar and Sulm. The history of the company shows the development of mobility in a special way: from the bicycle to the motorcycle to the automobile. 150 years ago, in 1873, Christian Schmidt and Heinrich Stoll founded the “Mechanical Workshop Schmidt & Stoll” for the manufacture of knitting machines, from which NSU Motorenwerke AG and later the Audi site in Neckarsulm developed. At the start of the show there is a 176-page anniversary magazine that has the same name as the exhibition itself.
“The history of the NSU brand is characterized by innovations, daring decisions and extraordinary personalities,” says Natalie Scheerle-Walz, director of the German Two-Wheeler and NSU Museum in Neckarsulm. The NSU 500 four-cylinder racing machine, for example, is absolutely unique in the collection and paved the way for later world champion machines, which can also be seen alongside record-breaking vehicles and prototypes in the German Two-Wheeler and NSU Museum. They are supplemented by 85 NSU exhibits in the museum’s permanent exhibition.
Audi Traditon is showing further exhibits from the brand in the Neckarsulm Forum: 22 motorcycles, mopeds and scooters, 19 cars and nine bicycles as well as things such as the first Wankel engine, the Stoll knitting machine and the so-called “Alu-Egg” as a 1:4 scale model. “Alu-Ei” is a nickname for a car from the early 1910s, the NSU Type 8/24 hp. Back then, NSU used aluminum as a lightweight material for the body for the first time.
Another special exhibition is embedded in the NSU show: “40 years of Audi Sport GmbH – fascination meets performance”.
The German Two-Wheeler and NSU Museum in Neckarsulm is open from Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is 7.50 euros (discount with motorcycle or bicycle helmet), children pay four euros. The Audi Forum Neckarsulm is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on selected Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free. (awm)
