“We are proud” is the summary of director Karl Regensburger’s conclusion for the 40th edition of the ImPulsTanz festival. “We’re scratching the number of 150,000 visitors,” he summed up at a press conference on Thursday. “That’s 50 percent more than Rammstein did in Vienna,” said the longtime boss with satisfaction. Preliminary calculations indicate around 148,000 guests for the anniversary edition – 93,000 of them paying.
The sum is of course an extrapolation, because the festival is in the middle of the final. The program is still on offer until Sunday – with an followingthought called “The Sound of Musick” (sic!) on August 10th and 12th at the Odeon, which promises a “Grand and Glorious Party”. With the forecast 148,000 interested people, it is above the previous year’s figure of almost 138,000. At 96 percent, utilization is marginally below the 97 percent achieved in 2022.
With 68 productions by 56 companies and artists, ImPulsTanz had a total of 165 performances this year (including 20 additional performances), including eleven premieres and 44 Austrian premieres. There is also a supporting program of exhibitions, film events, talks and book presentations. Almost 40,000 course units were booked by 3,100 participants at the 224 workshops. In the course of the “Public Moves” track, a total of around 17,500 people are expected to attend the 118 dance classes at five locations.
Upcoming highlights at the media event included the Austrian premieres of “The Pressing” by Dani Brown this Thursday and Saturday in Hall G in the Museumsquartier, Nadia Beugré’s solo “Quartiers Libres” on Friday and Sunday in the Odeon, and ” Jérôme Bel”, the “auto-bio-choreographic” piece by the choreographer of the same name, with actor Max Mayer on Saturday and Sunday in the casino on Schwarzenbergplatz. On Saturday, the Young Choreographers’ Award, endowed with 5,000 euros and an Artistic Residency at ImPulsTanz 2024, will also be presented in the Red Bar of the Volkstheater.
