Before he could take the money back, a police dog came across the loot. It was initially unclear whether the entire number of passengers came from the bus.
As the Salzburg State Police Department reported on Monday, the coach was traveling from Dortmund towards Turkey on January 19th. Shortly after 1 a.m., an initially unknown traveler complained of health problems while driving on the Tauern Autobahn in Salzburg. The driver then stopped the bus in the Werden (Pongau) area. The man jumped out of the bus and fled over the fence into a nearby forest.
Bus passengers then noticed that they had been robbed and called the police. The officers checked a car in which two men were sitting in the area of the parked bus. Since the bus driver recognized one of the men as a passenger who had previously ridden a part of the bus, the police suspected there was a connection to the theft. The men in the car – a Bulgarian (51) and a Turk (42) – were therefore questioned at the nearest office. However, both denied any allegations.
Complaint against thief and accomplices
After consultation with the public prosecutor’s office, the duo was released at around 7:30 a.m., but the police continued to monitor them. In fact, the fugitive thief from the coach got into her car a short time later. The officers therefore checked the car again. When confronted, the bus driver was able to recognize the 47-year-old as the escaping passenger. Nevertheless, the suspect denied all allegations.
However, police officers found shoe marks not far from where the man jumped out of the bus that could be attributed to the suspect. A police dog also found the bag with the money that had been left there nearby. The results of the investigation into the origin of the money are still pending; the 47-year-old Turk and his two accomplices are reported to be at large.
