A iFixit released today the teardown of the new 14-inch MacBook Propresented just over a week ago at the event “Scary fast” (“It will give you goosebumps”). The dissected model was precisely the one in space black, which replaced the space gray variant — in the case of laptops equipped with the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips.
According to the analysis, the striking feature of this new color option is attributed to an anodizing process that not only enhances the aesthetics, but also reduces the visibility of fingerprint marks on the laptop’s surface.
Previously, the MacBook Pro — especially the space gray version — had a problem related to the way light was reflected on its surface. This resulted in a noticeable shine and gave the impression that the laptop was more gray than black.
iFixit speculates regarding an “anodization seal” on the model, designed to reduce the visibility of fingerprints. The theory suggests that the rough texture of the surface makes it difficult for oils and finger sweat to spread, resulting in more subtle marks.
In a more detailed analysis, the disassembly revealed other information regarding the internal components of the MacBook Pro. The modular design, for example, allows easy replacement of components, except for the ports for SD cards and HDMI cables.
On the other hand, some key components, like the lid angle sensor and Touch ID, are paired with the motherboard and require Apple-approved repair services for replacement.
The entry-level version of the laptop is equipped with 8GB of unified memory and two flash storage modules — which basically frees them from the problems related to data reading and writing speed suffered by the 13″ and 15″ MacBooks Air (M2) plus cheap, with 256GB SSDSolid-state driveor solid state drive.”>1and the old 13″ MacBook Pro (M2), with the same amount of storage.
However, not being able to upgrade can be a challenge in the long term, especially as software demands for more memory increase, which can affect performance when handling more complex tasks in the future.
Ultimately, iFixit concluded that while the new MacBook Pro boasts a robust design and performance improvements, Apple’s continued restrictions on repairs and upgrades raise concerns regarding the device’s long-term repairability. The product received a provisional score of 4 out of a possible 10.
