14% drop in national crude oil production in 2022

National production of crude oil fell by 14%, between 2021 and 2022, to 1,656 kilotonnes (kt), reveals the monthly report on the energy situation published on February 9, 2023, by the National Observatory for Energy and mines. According to this report, which covers the whole of 2022, this drop affected most of the main oil fields including Halk el Manzel, Baraka, Adam, El Borma, Cherouq, Hasdrubal, El Hajeb/Guebiba, MLD and Cercina. On the other hand, the fields of Gherib, Franig, Bag, Tarfa and Sidi Marzouk experienced an improvement in production.

Slight increase of 0.4% in national demand for petroleum products

As for the national demand for petroleum products, it experienced between 2021 and 2022, a slight increase of 0.4%, to stand at 4,552 kilotons of oil equivalent (ktoe). This increase is mainly due to the measures taken by the government in 2021 to contain the spread of the covid-19 pandemic, explains the Observatory.

It concerned gasoline (+4%), aviation jet kerosene (+66%) and liquefied petroleum gas (+1%). On the other hand, demand for petroleum coke fell by 13%. According to the report, the structure of the consumption of petroleum products has not changed significantly between 2021 and 2022, with the exception of a few products, in particular jets, whose share has increased from 3% to 5%. On the other hand, the consumption of road fuels recorded a quasi-stability, between 2021 and 2022, representing 64% of the total consumption of petroleum products. LPG consumption increased by 1% between 2021 and 2022. Petroleum coke consumption, which is used exclusively by cement works, decreased by 13% between 2021 and 2022. On the other hand, the consumption of jet aviation recorded a significant increase of 66% in 2022, compared to the same period of the previous year, following the recovery of activities in the air transport sector which have suffered the full brunt of the repercussions of the pandemic of the Coronavirus.
