13,971 new games were released on Steam last year, and these are the 10 biggest games that took in over 60% of revenue
At the start of the year, Steam revealed a lot of data concerning 2023. We find in particular the top 10 games with the best revenues and, without much surprise, they alone include more than 60% of the overall revenues of the 14 000 other titles released.

2023 was a record year for PC gaming and for Steam: in total, 13,971 new games appeared on the Valve platform but very few of them really earned a lot of money like Baldur’s Gate 3 or Hogwarts Legacy.
How much money did new games make on Steam?
The Venturebeat site published a major report on Steam. Total gaming revenue on Steam (Full Game Sale Revenue) has doubled since 2019, from $4.5 billion to 9 billion dollars in 2023. In 2023, turnover increased significantly again after a long pause, while it remained almost the same between 2020 and 2022.
Of these 9 billion dollars, about 3 billion comes from “new games”. And of these 3 billion, almost all goes to the 100 biggest new titles of the year, or 91% of turnover. The distribution of revenue is even more detailed: the top 10 share 61% of the pie.
The top 10 new releases with the biggest revenue on Steam
The biggest new game of 2023 on Steam was Baldur’s Gate 3. The epic role-playing game is estimated to have grossed $657 million on Steam. This represents 21% of the turnover generated when new games are released.
Out of 14,000 new games on Steam, only 5% generate revenue over $100,000. However, only 181 of them were AAA or AA games, that is, games with high production value.
