1,393 people arrested for protests since July 29

  • The NGO indicated that of that number, at least 129 are adolescents.

The Penal Forum reported that the number of people arrested in the context of the protests has risen to 1,503. The total number of arrests is 87 new compared to the previous report.

Among those deprived of liberty are 129 adolescents, 14 indigenous people, 18 people with disabilities and 200 women, he detailed on his X account (formerly Twitter).

The NGO also said that 90 people had been released during this period.

On the other hand, the states where the highest number of arrests are reported are: Capital District, with 315; Carabobo, with 196; Anzoátegui, with 113, and Aragua, with 107.

The NGO’s figures contrast with those of the Venezuelan government, which, as of August 15, counted 2,400 people arrested during the protests. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, 25 deaths were recorded.

Arrests following the Great Global Protest

On Saturday, August 17, state security officials arrested several people in different states of the country during the Great World Protest called by the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD).

Gonzalo Himiob, vice president of the Penal Forum, reported in X the arrest of Alexander Gómez, a human rights defender, in Puerto Ayacucho, Amazonas. Gómez was arrested along with other people, whose identity is still unknown.

In the same state, social media users reported the arrest of a woman for making a sculpture of a war tank out of cardboard.

Users on social networks reported in X In Maracay, Aragua state, GNB officers arrested a man in one of their vehicles. The identity of the person is still unknown.
