Girl (13) allegedly drilled a hole in his head during surgery
Gregor R. receives no explanation and no apology

Is a word of regret too much to ask?
There is a suspected surgical scandal in Austria: a 13-year-old girl is said to have drilled a hole in a patient’s skull. The accusation itself is serious. But what’s more, no one from the clinic has contacted the former patient to date.
“There was nothing. This is simply undignified”
The story begins on January 13, 2024. After a serious accident, Gregor R. ends up unconscious in the operating room at the University Hospital of Graz in Styria. He has to undergo surgery on his head, which requires drilling into his skull. And this part of the procedure is said to have been carried out by a child: the 13-year-old daughter of a neurosurgeon.
Outrageous? The public prosecutor’s office also thinks so, and the accusation was reported anonymously to them in April, as the Kronen-Zeitung lists in a chronology of the case. The paper says that when the report was made, they believed it was a “bad joke.” The newspaper is also the one that made the case public in June.

Reading tip: Scandal in the operating room: Did the doctor let her daughter (13) also undergo surgery?
The main character – patient Gregor R. – only found out about all this from the police in early July, according to the Kronen-Zeitung. According to a report in Der Spiegel, R. had read that a 13-year-old girl had taken part in an operation. However, he did not know that he was the one affected. One of the disturbing details of the case is that the child used the drill “freehand” during the operation, it continues.

Doctor is said to have admitted that the 13-year-old had drilled the hole
At the beginning of last week, the Kronen-Zeitung reported again that, according to investigations, several people involved in the operation had admitted that the 13-year-old had actually drilled the hole in the patient’s skull. Der Spiegel quoted Gregor R.’s lawyer Freiberger: “One of the doctors involved seems to have admitted internally that the 13-year-old had drilled the hole – now he is said to deny it.”

After the new findings became known, the Kronen-Zeitung wrote that R. and Freiberger were particularly bothered by the fact that neither the hospital association nor the university hospital had “ever contacted those affected”. Freiberger told the Bild newspaper: “There was no contact, no explanation or apology, nothing. This is simply undignified.” The newspaper asked the university hospital for a statement. The statement said that no contact had been made “because the patient joined the criminal proceedings as a private party and is therefore a party to the criminal proceedings.”
This is how it continues
What happens next? The neurosurgeon, whose daughter is said to have drilled the hole, has been on leave for a long time, as has another doctor. According to reports, Gregor R. “cannot remember anything.” The operation may have saved his life, but he is still unable to work. His lawyer wants to sue the clinic for damages. He is waiting for the final report from the criminal investigation department, which is due to be presented shortly.
