13-year-old allegedly drilled open skull during operation in Graz

It was already known that a now-dismissed surgeon from the University Hospital of Graz had her 13-year-old daughter actively participate in a skull operation. But now further details have become public. According to a report in the “Kleine Zeitung”, the girl is said to have even drilled open the patient’s head during the emergency operation.

Lawyer demands compensation

Peter Freiberger, the 33-year-old patient’s lawyer, speaks of suspicion of serious bodily harm, for which there is no justification. He wants to take civil action against all those involved who were in the operating room and demand compensation for pain and suffering. In any case, no legal action can be taken against the underage girl.

The 33-year-old Styrian had an accident at the beginning of the year while working in the forestry district of Weiz and was taken to the Graz hospital, where emergency surgery had to be performed on his head. The operation was necessary, there is no dispute about that, says the patient’s lawyer. But it should not be allowed to undergo such an operation on a 13-year-old, criticizes Freiberger.

Operation without complications

The operation itself went without complications, as the hospital operator Kages stressed. However, the lawyer criticizes the fact that the hospital has not yet apologized to the 33-year-old. The patient only found out weeks later from the police that it was his operation during which a child had allegedly been involved and which had been reported in the media. “That is simply undignified,” stresses the lawyer.

Kages announced that the dismissal of two doctors remained in place, and that warnings had been issued to the remaining members of the surgical team. The victim was not informed because it was first necessary to check which operation the incident had occurred during.
