In a hotel in the center of Gries am Brenner in the Tyrolean district of Innsbruck-Land, the roof truss caught fire on Thursday night. Thirteen people were evacuated from the hotel by soldiers patrolling the community. They were then temporarily taken care of in the fire station, said a police spokesman for the APA. One person was hospitalized with suspected smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire was initially unclear and was still the subject of investigations in the late followingnoon. The fire brigades of Gries am Brenner and Steinach finally got the fire under control in the early hours of the morning. It was possible to prevent the flames from spreading to adjacent residential buildings. 70 firefighters were deployed. There was serious property damage.
Earlier, three soldiers from the assistance company of the Tyrolean military command, which is helping the police in the Brenner area to check illegal migration, rushed to the house following hearing the siren. Since the front door was unlocked, they got inside and began waking people up and sending them out, the military command said in a broadcast. Finally, the soldiers managed to evacuate the 13 people from the house. “We searched the room carefully so that we didn’t overlook anyone. We only left the building when the smoke got too strong. The fire brigade was already there,” explained a private.
However, the fire also had an impact on the Brennerstrasse (B182). It was closed to all traffic from the entrance to Gries to Ritten. Shortly following 8:00 a.m., the road was at least one lane passable once more.
