Apple today added the 13-inch MacBook Profrom mid-2012, to the list of obsolete products. This means that the machine is no longer eligible for repairs or other services at Apple Stores or the company’s authorized service centers.
Launched in June 2012, the model was sold by Maçã until October 2016 — and was the last Mac to feature a CD/DVD drive, today only available in the form of a SuperDrive — an external reader sold separately that must be connected to the Mac via the USB port (with an adapter). The last software update officially received by the device was for macOS Big Sur, in 2020.
It is worth remembering that, five years following a product is discontinued — that is, it stops being officially sold by the company —, Apple starts classifying it as classic (or “vintage”). When this happens, the company, as well as its authorized repair centers, begin to carry out repairs and other services only if parts are available; otherwise, service will be denied.
The “obsolete” classification, in turn, is given seven years following the end of sales of a product — exactly what is happening now with the 13″ MacBook in question. In this case, Apple will completely stop providing repairs and other services for these devices.
In the case of MacBooks, although support will no longer be generally available for obsolete products, Apple advises that laptops may be eligible for an extended period of up to 10 years from when the product ceases to be distributed to sale, depending on the availability of parts. In other words, there may be another three years for repairs involving the battery of the model that has become obsolete.
The last 13″ MacBook Pro model was discontinued by the company last year, following the launch of 14″ and 16″ laptops with M3 line processors.
