The holiday season brings joy and festivities for families and their friends, however, it is essential to be aware of the potential health risks associated with close contact with other people. This is especially true for the flu, COVID-19, RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), and other infections that spread easily from person to person. Here’s how you can prioritize your health (and that of your loved ones) during this season.

1. Follow national health guidelines: Stay informed regarding the latest health guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention related to COVID-19. Follow the recommendations of health authorities to reduce the risk of infections.

2. Maintain good hygiene in your hands: Washing them regularly with soap and water remains one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of infection. Use hand sanitizer when soap is not available.

3. Practice social distancing: Keep a safe distance from others, especially if someone is feeling unwell or sick.

4. Wear masks: If you are in crowded places or indoors, wearing a mask is additional protection for you and others. Make sure your mask adequately covers your nose and mouth.

5. Strengthen your natural immunity: Strengthen your immune system with a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Include fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains in your meals, and choose healthy drinks when possible.

6. Stay active: Exercise regularly, have a strengthened and healthy immune system. Find ways to exercise indoors or outdoors, following safety guidelines.

7. Get enough sleep: Prioritize getting enough sleep each night, as it is crucial to your body’s ability to fight illness or recover from infections. It is recommended that you sleep at least 7-8 hours so you will have quality sleep every night.

8. Stay up to date with your vaccines: Get vaccinated once morest the flu and COVID-19. Flu season coincides with the holidays; Vaccination can significantly reduce the risk of flu-related illnesses. Your doctor may recommend other vaccines that might also be helpful for you in addition to these.

9. Isolate yourself if you are sick: If you feel unwell or have symptoms of the flu, COVID-19, the common cold, or other illnesses, isolate yourself from others to prevent the possible spread of your illness.

10. Consider holding virtual celebrations: Phone and video calls instead of in-person meetings can help you stay healthy if you or others are at higher risk of illness.

11. Hydration: Stay well hydrated to support your body’s natural defense mechanisms. Water helps eliminate toxins and maintain overall health.

12. Manage your stress: The holidays can be stressful with so much going on. Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation to manage stress levels. Christmas stress can lead to sadness, depression or anxiety, especially for those far from home who cannot travel to see loved ones. Monitor your feelings and emotions, and talk to someone you trust, including your health care provider if you need help.

Have a wonderful and healthy holiday!
